The College of Arts and Science faculty are at the heart of our school. World-renowned experts in their fields, they lead research that informs the way we see, understand, and live in the world around us. At the same time, they strongly value their teaching and connection with their students, often working with undergraduates on research projects and discussing issues after class. With a low 7:1 student to faculty ratio, instructors are uniquely accessible for assistance, support, research, and guidance.

Anthropology

Caramanica has revealed that what appeared to be natural massive earth mounds on the north coast of Peru are actually the remnants of large dams built by ancient peoples to control runoff from storms and irrigate the desert landscape. With a prestigious new grant, she will explore what this can teach us about addressing the modern-day challenge of climate change.

Biological Sciences

Johnson and a team of Vanderbilt scientists have succeeded in adjusting the daily biological clock of cyanobacteria, making the blue-green algae a more prolific producer of renewable fuels, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, like insulin.

“Woven Wind,” led by Pavlović, is a collaborative research project that weaves together archival research, community engagement, and artistic expression to create a vibrant tapestry of remembrance and reconciliation, honoring these untold stories and empowering the descendants of enslaved people.
