FLAS FELLOWSHIP – We are receiving applications! Due date: Feb 5 2024

CLACX at Vanderbilt University receives funding from the Department of Education to support Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Awards for Intensive Studies of Portuguese or indigenous Latin American languages. Fellowships provide tuition expenses for the study of Portuguese, Kˈicheˈ Mayan, or another indigenous language.

Any graduate or undergraduate student with Luso-Brazilian, Haitian, or indigenous language-related interests and who is a U.S. citizen/permanent resident is eligible to apply. Undergraduate applicants must have already attained intermediate-level proficiency in the target language. Graduate students, if at the beginner level, must be advanced speakers of another Latin American language to qualify.

STUDY K’ICHE’ MAYAN THIS SUMMER IN GUATEMALA WITH A FLAS FELLOWSHIP!

Vanderbilt’s Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies offers Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships for the study of K’iche’ Mayan and co-hosts the Mayan Language Institute in Guatemala with Tulane University.

Dates for 2024: June 22 – August 3.
Summer FLAS Fellowships include $5000 in tuition support and a $3500 stipend.

Eligibility
Students must be:

  • Undergraduates must be at the
    intermediate or advanced level of study
    of K’iche’
  • Citizens, nationals, or permanent
    residents of the US
  • Graduate students must be at the
    intermediate level of language proficiency
    or above to study in Guatemala

We also offer Academic Year fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students:
Undergraduate AY FLAS Fellowships include $10,000 in tuition support and a $5000 AY stipend.
Eligibility for undergraduates:

  • Must be at the intermediate level of language proficiency or above
  • Must be enrolled in KICH 2201 in Fall and KICH 2202 for Spring
  • Must be enrolled in a course focused on Latin America for both Fall and Spring semesters
  • Must be a US citizen

Graduate AY FLAS Fellowships include $18,000 in tuition support and a $20,000 AY stipend.
Eligibility for graduate students:

  • Must be enrolled in a K’iche’ Mayan language course for both Fall and Spring semesters
  • Must be enrolled in a course focused on Latin America for both Fall and Spring semesters
  • Must be a US citizen

STUDY PORTUGUESE THIS SUMMER IN BRAZIL WITH A FLAS FELLOWSHIP!

Dates for 2024: June 8-July 20.
Summer FLAS Fellowships include $5000 in tuition support and a $3500 stipend.

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduates must be at the

    proficiency or above
  • Citizens, nationals, or permanent
    residents of the US
  • Graduate students must be at the
    intermediate level of language proficiency
    or above to study in Brazil

Both applications will be due February 5, 2024 with winners announced in March.
