New Growth
Southeast Engine
make modern day folk music influenced heavily by their Appalachian roots of Athens, Ohio. Their latest album, Canary, which was released at the end of March 2011, marks a new step forward in both content and orchestration. The album focuses on the stories of one Appalachian family struggling through the Great Depression. With Canary, Southeast Engine demonstrate once again their powerful ability to create strong narrative-driven songs which use subtle metaphors to convey many simultaneous layers of meaning. The wavering vocals of lead singer Adam Remnant invoke the feeling of being someplace old and dusty, but the poetical fierceness and determination ultimately propel the narrative onward to a place where hope is inevitable.
