Nashville Review seeks to publish the best work we can get our hands on, period. From expansive to minimalist, narrative to lyric, epiphanic to subtle: if it’s a moving work of art, we want it. We hope to provide a venue for both distinguished and emerging artists. Most importantly, thank you for giving us a chance to read your work. We appreciate it.

Reading Periods

We consider submissions in Fiction, Poetry, and Nonfiction three times a year: January, May and September. We typically respond to submissions within 4-5 months. Submissions in all other genres (Comics, Art, and Translations) are open year-round.

General Guidelines

There is no fee to submit and we are proud to pay our contributors: $25 per poem and $100 for prose and art pieces.

Manuscripts for Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction, and Translations must be paginated and must not include any personal or contact information. Prose must be double-spaced. If your poem uses white space in a nontraditional way, we recommend submitting in .pdf format. Include a brief cover letter with a short bio in the ‘Comments’ section of your submission.

All submissions must be previously unpublished.

We encourage simultaneous submissions: if your work is accepted elsewhere, wonderful! Just leave a note via Submittable as soon as possible so we know the piece has been taken elsewhere. Please submit only once per genre, per reading period.

Current and former (within 5 years) students and employees of Vanderbilt University are ineligible to submit.

Please visit our online submissions manager to send us your work. Submissions received via email will not be read.

Fiction Guidelines

We consider short stories and novel excerpts up to 8,000 words, or up to three flash fiction pieces (up to 1,000 words each).

Poetry Guidelines

Please send up to 3 poems (no length requirement) in one document.

Nonfiction Guidelines

We welcome creative nonfiction across the spectrum: memoir excerpts, essays, imaginative meditations. Send up to 8,000 words.

Comics Guidelines

We’re seeking anything from one-page comics to excerpts from graphic novels. We do not publish cartoons in the style of The New Yorker.

The Nashville Review is proud to include Translation as a new submission category from NR 24 onwards! In this category, we are looking for fresh contemporary writing that is currently unavailable to English-language readers—pieces that have been published in their original language, but are previously unpublished in English.

Please send prose pieces up to 8,000 words or a maximum of two poems from the same author. Please also ensure you have permission from the rights holder to translate before you submit. (Detailed submissions instructions can be found via our online submissions manager.)

Featured Artist Guidelines

We will consider 1-2 Featured Artists for each issue. Up to thirteen pieces of art will be showcased; each contributing artist will be paid $100. Submissions must be in a landscape/horizontal orientation. A number of pieces will be used as banners for Section pages on our website (check out our current issue as an example), requiring dimensions of 1492×682; dimensions for pieces showcased on the actual Art Section page of the issue can be flexible. Please send us a cover letter including a short bio and brief artist statement, along with two versions of your work—one with your original dimensions and a second cropped version for the website banners—as attachments to the Editors at
