Welcome to the College of Arts and Science!
You’re about to embark on a journey of exploration and discovery that will prepare you to tackle society’s biggest problems, find success in our rapidly changing economy, and make a positive impact on our world. In the College of Arts and Science (A&S), you will learn how to think critically, communicate effectively, question analytically, and explore deeply. And you will gain the fundamental knowledge to excel in a range of professions—knowledge that employers consistently seek in the workforce.
Our interdisciplinary environment will train you to forge connections across specializations and with other people. And with a strong commitment to diversity, we offer an environment where you can learn as much from your fellow students as from your professors. We’re so glad you’ve decided to join us in the College of Arts and Science. We are a school of explorers, and we are excited to start this journey with you.
AXLE (Core Curriculum) and CASPAR (Pre-Major Advising)
As an incoming student, you’ll encounter two programs that are unique to the College of Arts and Science: AXLE and CASPAR. AXLE (Achieving eXcellence in Liberal Education) is the college’s core curriculum. It’s designed to help you take full advantage of our unique breadth of opportunities to explore and learn. CASPAR (College of Arts and Science Pre-major Academic Advising Resource) is our dedicated advising program for all A&S students. Your dedicated CASPAR adviser will work with you from before you arrive at Vanderbilt until you declare your major.
