I am broadly interested in the Greek language and its speakers from the Bronze Age to the koine. My area of specialty is the dialects of Ancient Greek and their development across time, space, and social contexts, with particular attention to the ways dialect functions to express identity and as a marker of genre in poetry. My current project examines the poetic dialect of Sappho and Alcaeus. Using the methods and analysis of historical linguistics, my work addresses questions such as their relationship to earlier poetic traditions on Lesbos and the nature of their engagement with Homer and epic poetry. My additional research and teaching interests include Homeric linguistics, epigraphy and the emergence of the Greek koine, Linear B, archaic lyric poetry and its Hellenistic and Augustan reception.
