Global South/US South

Along with the rest of the nation, the US South is a steadily changing region in terms of demographics with regard to the increasing Latinx population.  As such, response to this expanding population is imminent if not incumbent upon forward-thinking businesses, human service organizations, and educational institutions. In view of overwhelming evidence of a burgeoning Latinx population, especially in the Southeastern United States, along with its attendant cultural production and the socio-economic and political considerations relevant to this nation’s shifting demographics, CLACX seeks to examine the connections between the US South and the Global South. More and more in this country and in this region of the United States, service to the community and society at large will entail negotiating change brought about by the aforementioned demographic shifts and dealing closely with a population significantly comprised of Latinx people.

CLACX affiliated faculty are engaged with questions such as:

• How has the growing Latinx population reconfigured the US South?
• People from different parts of the country often view the South as a monolith, when it is—like any place—a diverse, complex, and dynamic region. How is that diversity, complexity, or dynamism manifested?
• What other misconceptions about the South might be especially limiting or under-informed?
• What will it take to dismantle or transcend the racial binary in the South?
