Summer 2024 K-12 Educator Institute now open!
This institute, Towards a More Equitable and Inclusive Digital World in Latin America: A Workshop for K-12 Educators will take place at Vanderbilt University June 24-28, 2024.
The institute will introduce K-12 educators to evidence-based, inclusive approaches, techniques, and instructional strategies aimed at creating supportive, learner-centered environments to enhance the teaching of inclusive digital technology in Latin America. The program will introduce participants to Latin Americanist scholars and educators who leverage digital technology to expand knowledge about Latin America and its people. Additionally, activists using digital platforms as a tool for social justice and to amplify the voices of marginalized populations in Latin America will be featured.
The institute will also include hands-on workshops demonstrating how to use digital platforms such as, podcasts and AI, in the K-12 classroom to address the diverse learning needs of all students. Participants will gain access to digital archives that can facilitate lesson planning and classroom teaching on Latin America.
2024 Summer Institute Tentative Schedule
By the end of the institute, participants will be able to:
- Utilize digital resources to design learning experiences for students
- Understand ways that students can interact with digital resources in order to engage with Latin America in authentic ways
- Demonstrate the information they learn by becoming digital creators themselves
- Create a portfolio of digital resources on Latin America
- Reflect (self and peer reflection) on their learning and create an action plan for ongoing growth and assessment

This institute is part of a four-year series in collaboration with the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane, University, and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona. This summer’s institute is hosted by the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx Studies (CLACX) at Vanderbilt University and will take place on campus in Nashville, TN.

Thanks to generous funding from our co-sponsors at Tulane University and the University of Arizona, we offer financial assistance to be used for travel, lodging, registration fees, and/or materials required for the participation in an educator professional development program relating to Latin America. Funds are limited.
To be granted the travel awards, educators should be willing to create at least one lesson plan based on the content presented during the institute and submit it by January 8th, 2025. Travel award requests are due on February 26, 2024. If granted, educators will be notified no later than March 8, 2024.
