Luis F. López González

Assistant Professor of Spanish

Luis F. López González earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University. His doctoral research focused on the representation of suicide in medieval Spanish literature. Prior to joining the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Vanderbilt University, Professor López taught at the Harvard Divinity School and Harvard University, where he won multiple awards for his teaching. Professor López has published more than a dozen articles in peer-reviewed academic journals that cover a wide range of medieval texts and topics. His recent research includes the phenomenology of the gendered gaze and visual discourses, and the role the gaze played in the formation of medieval subjectivity. His current projects explore the intersection between medicine and literature or humoral pathology, with a particular emphasis on melancholy and its links to mental disorders, such as madness, suicidal depression, and lovesickness.
