Dr. Gregg M. Olsen, Fulbright Canada Research Chair, Vanderbilt University

Dr. Gregg M. Olsen is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, where he has been based for over three decades. His research focuses on social inequality, social policy and welfare states from a comparative perspective. His work examines the distribution of income and wealth, poverty, and homelessness while also illuminating inequality’s human dimensions, access to rights, inclusion, and the distribution of power.

Published in numerous articles and books, including The Politics of the Welfare State: Canada, Sweden and the United States (Oxford University Press), Power and Inequality (Oxford University Press) and Poverty and Austerity amid Prosperity (University of Toronto Press) Dr. Olsen’s cross-national approach has distinctly furthered understanding of why inequality varies dramatically across nations.

Dr. Olsen is the recipient of several teaching awards at the University of Manitoba, including its Teaching Excellence Award, Internationalization Award and Outstanding Professor Award. His work has been acknowledged and cited by Ed Broadbent, former leader of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) and in the debates of the Manitoba legislature. His research and expertise have taken him to over 25 nations, being sought by professional associations, universities and research institutes, and documentary filmmakers. He was recently awarded the Fulbright Canada Research Chair, held in the Department of Sociology at Vanderbilt University.
