William C. Havard Jr.

Harvey Branscomb Distinguished Professor of Political Science, Emeritus
At Vanderbilt from 1977 to 1988

William C. Havard joined the Department of Political Science at Vanderbilt University in 1977, and served as chair of the department. In 1986/87 academic year, he was named the Harvey Branscomb Distinguished Professor of Political Science.

Prof. Havard was elected President of three regional political science associations, including the Southern Political Science Association. He was elected to the Council of the American Political Science Association and was president of the political science honorary, Pi Sigma Alpha. In addition, he served as editor of The Journal of Politics.

He actively sought to draw together the social sciences and the humanities. He authored and co-authored 17 books. His many articles, chapters and other writings made major impacts in political philosophy and American politics, with special impact in the areas of literature and politics, and Southern politics.
