Grad Students Secure Grants for Summer Programs
Two Department of Mathematics graduate students have received travel grants to attend research programs and conferences in the U.S. and abroad this summer.
Emily Marshall, a fourth-year graduate student, was awarded an East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute grant from the National Science Foundation to study at Monash University in Australia for two months from mid-June to mid-August, 2013. She was also accepted to the Institute for Advanced Study?s 2013 Program for Women in Mathematics at Princeton University, which was held May 13-24.
Curt Kent, who received his Ph.D. in May 2013, received grants to attend two conferences this summer. He will attend the International Conference on Geometric, Combinatorial and Dynamics Aspects of Semigroup and Group Theory in Tel Aviv June 11-14 and will participate in the American Mathematical Society (AMS) Mathematical Research Community?s Section on Geometric Group Theory in Snowbird, Utah, June 16-22. Kent applied for and received travel support from each of those conferences. In addition, he received a travel grant earlier this year to attend the Young Geometric Group Theory Conference in Haifa Israel In February.
Michael HullA third graduate student, Michael Hull, attended the Joint Mathematical Meetings of the AMS and the Mathematical Association of America in San Diego in January, 2013, with travel grants from the AMS and the Vanderbilt Graduate Student Council. Hull received his Ph.D. in May 2013.
?There are many opportunities for graduate students to obtain travel support to attend international conference and research programs,? says Mike Neamtu, acting chair of the department for 2012-2013. ?These three students took the initiative to take advantage of those opportunities, and we hope that other graduate students will follow their example.?
