The Vanderbilt Department of English presents the Fall 2022 Drake Lecture on Oct. 7th at 3:15pm in the Main Library 4th Floor Community Room. This event is free and open to the public.

“Monstrous Hands: Thinking Martin Heidegger” with Professor Grant Farred, visiting from Cornell University.

“The hand,” Heidegger insists, “is the instrument of thinking.” “The hand,” Heidegger determines, “signs.” Heidegger’s is an argument is simultaneously persuasive and marked by a critical absence. It is indeed so provocative that Jacques Derrida, in response, writes an essay, “Heidegger’s Hand.” “Monstrous Hands” is, then, as much the latest engagement with the hand Heidegger thinks as it is a thinking for what Heidegger, and Derrida, too, it must be said, do not think. Using an account of the 1936 US Olympic team rowers, “Monstrous Hands” brings into view that hand not thought by Heidegger and Derrida.
