Students working on an archaeological site

The Archaeological Institute of America: Nashville Society

The Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies has long enjoyed a special relationship with the Archaeological Institute of America as a leading supporter of the institute’s chapter in Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Society. The local society hosts an annual series of lectures both at the Nashville Parthenon in Centennial Park and on campus at Vanderbilt. These events are an opportunity for students and faculty to hear exciting presentations on current research by leading scholars.

The Organization

The Archaeological Institute of America is an international organization of professional archaeologists and interested lay members devoted to the advancement of archaeological work and sites worldwide. The AIA is an advocacy group for the preservation of antiquities and sponsors lectures and tours to promote interest in and enjoyment of archaeology. In addition to local lectures and international tours, the AIA publishes both Archaeology (a bimonthly magazine on archaeological work around the world) and the American Journal of Archaeology (a scholarly research journal). Nashville is the location of one of more than 100 local societies which are found in North America, Greece, and the Iberian Peninsula.

If you are interested in joining the Nashville AIA, please visit the official site. By becoming a member of the national AIA, you automatically become a member of the local society and enjoy free admission to the lectures.

The Lecture Series

The Nashville Society of the AIA in partnership with the Nashville Parthenon sponsors several lectures during the academic year. All events are open to the public, but please call (615) 862-8431 to reserve a seat. A reception follows each lecture. See our upcoming events for the schedule.
