Understanding AXLE

AXLE (Achieving EXcellence in Liberal Education) is the core liberal arts curriculum of the College of Arts & Science. Check out the following links for explanations of AXLE requirements. 


English 1100

One option to satisfy the ENGL1100 requirement is a score of 55 or higher on the Tailwind proficiency exam.

If you choose this option, please read the instructions below carefully.

It is important to take the examination seriously and to prepare yourself mentally for it.  Schedule the exam at a time of day when you believe you are usually at your best or at a time when stress is usually low.  You may wish to take the practice test which can be found here:

Once you have registered, you will receive all of this in an email from  but we wanted to explain the requirements here as well. Note, if you do not follow the instructions,  you will not be allowed to take the test.

Below are a few important things to look for in the Scantron email:  

  1. You will be taking a proctored exam so your computer must have a speaker, microphone, webcam, and internet access. The email from Scantron will ask you to test your computer to ensure it meets their requirements.
  2. This is a proctored exam--you are not allowed to use outside resources of any kind, and you will be monitored while taking the test.
  3. Ensure you enter the correct time zone for the test.
  4. Do not delete the confirmation email until you have finished the test.
  5. You will need a government-issued ID that matches the name on your Vanderbilt records.

You will be able to schedule your test as soon as you receive the email from Scantron. You must have completed the test by  July 20, 2022 You have two chances to take the test and you will receive your score immediately.  In order to satisfy the English 1100 requirement with the proficiency exam, you must earn a score of 55 or higher.
