The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a climate science faculty position at the rank Assistant Professor of the Practice. We seek individuals with demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring, and a willingness to engage in teaching and research collaborations with a diverse and interdisciplinary group of faculty and students in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Environmental Sociology, Climate Studies, Civil & Environmental Engineering and other related fields. The position starts in fall 2024. This is a 9-month, non-tenure-track faculty appointment with a 2:2 teaching load, 3-year renewable contract conditional upon performance, and opportunity for a 3-month research effort supported through individual or collaborative external grants.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Department‘s teaching mission by offering introductory and advanced Climate, Paleoclimate, Atmospheric and/or Ocean Sciences classes. A willingness to teach a breadth of such courses, develop new ones and to help shape the department’s teaching curriculum is required. Successful candidates will also be enthusiastic about contributing to the new and strongly interdisciplinary Climate and Environmental Studies program and major, launched by the College of Arts & Science in the fall of 2022.

Qualifications

A PhD, in hand no later than August 1, 2024, in Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean Sciences, or related field is necessary. A strong foundation in climate science and atmospheric or oceanic processes is required. Interest or experience with both modern and/or ancient earth systems through the lens of quantitative methods and physical processes is preferred. Successful candidates will have a strong record of teaching excellence, interest in pedagogy, and experience working with diverse students.
