The Vanderbilt University Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies is pleased to present the 2023-2024 distinguished lecture, Book Panel in Honor of Peter R.L. Brown’s Journeys of the Mind. Over the course of six decades, the work of Peter Brown, the Philip and Beulah Rollins Professor of History, emeritus at Princeton University, has defined our understanding of “late antiquity”, the transitional period at the dawn of the Middle Ages. In this panel, five of his former students will respond to Brown’s autobiography, Journeys of the Mind (Princeton University Press, 2023). The Panelists for this event include:
Jelena Bogdanović, Vanderbilt University
Ariel López, Rhodes College
David Michelson, Vanderbilt University
Elizabeth Moodey, Vanderbilt University
Daniel Schwartz, Texas A&M University
Audience members are also invited to bring their questions for Brown, who will respond to the panel via teleconference.
This in-person panel will be held at 4:10pm on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in Divinity School G-29 and is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies, the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Religious Studies, the Department of History, the Department of History of Art and Architecture, and the Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership in the Professions.
