Honors Program

Honors in Chemistry

We offer an Honors degree in chemistry for interested students with an overall GPA of at least 3.3 and a GPA of at least 3.4 in chemistry courses at the start of their junior year.

Students in the Honors program must conduct three semesters of research; thus, students will register for the honors research courses (CHEM 3980, 4980, 4999—each is 2 credit hours) beginning spring semester junior year. Students are responsible for securing a spot in a research lab and are encouraged to work with their academic adviser on how to identify research opportunities in the department. The capstone laboratory sequence (CHEM 4965 and 4966) requirements are waived in lieu of CHEM 3980, 4980, and 4999.

Honors candidates must:

  • Present a written thesis on the research done in CHEM 3980, 4980, and 4999;
  • Pass an oral examination; and
  • Complete a final written examination.

Students interested in learning more about the Honors Program should contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
