Elephant, Elephant!
Tell me again of the time
you climbed
up the Homa mountain,
and birthed the Nile
from your mouth—
When in your esophagus,
the port towns slept
while you sowed fields
with ivory
and the sound of French horns.
Tell me how you called
and the black birds
abandoned their young,
lions swam into the sea,
fish crawled onto land,
and overlooking the savannahs,
I could see through your eyes
the grass burst into stone.
