This past year, Vanderbilt University launched its Sports & Society Microgrant Program, designed to engage the campus in investigating how sports and society impact each other across a variety of disciplines.

John Koch, senior lecturer of communication studies, has been awarded one of these Sports & Society microgrants. His proposal explores “Sports and Political Agency in the 21st Century.” With the grant, Professor Koch will bring to campus two nationally recognized scholars of sport and communication.

  • Michael Butterworth, Director of the Center for Sports Communication and Media, and Professor in the Department of Communication Studies, University of Texas at Austin.
  • Abraham Khan, Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Communication Arts & Sciences, Penn State University.

Both scholars will be on campus during the month of October to discuss their research and to consult on the subject of sport and communication in CMST at Vanderbilt.
