Chair’s Welcome

The Department of Art is a vibrant and dynamic creative laboratory, dedicated to fostering artistic expression, innovation, and critical thinking. Our department is committed to nurturing the next generation of creative leaders. With state-of-the-art facilities, a comprehensive curriculum, and a collaborative learning environment, we strive to empower students to explore their unique artistic voices, push boundaries, and contribute meaningfully to the ever-evolving world of visual arts. Whether through traditional mediums or cutting-edge technologies, the Art department endeavors to inspire, challenge, and equip individuals with the skills and insights necessary to becoming the creative problem solvers of the future.

Located in the light-filled E. Bronson Ingram Studio Arts Center, the Department of Art brings an annual roster of international visiting artists as part of our Studio VU Lecture Series.

Our Space 204 gallery rotates a roster of contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year.

Art majors are given unique opportunities to meet with renowned contemporary artists. During their senior year, art majors have access to private studios where they can focus on their capstone projects culminating in senior thesis exhibitions in our galleries.

Each year, students compete for the Margaret Stonewall Wooldridge Hamblet Award, in which a student is awarded significant funds for travel, along with a solo exhibition in our gallery post-graduation.
