grew up in New Jersey playing and singing bluegrass music with her father, Alan.  Now based out of Nashville, Tennessee, Struthers is performing her originals with her own band, an acoustic quartet comprised of fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and bass.  Her debut album is set for a June 22 release. – Zachary Greenberg

Greenberg: Did teaching literature in Brooklyn influence your songwriting?

Struthers: Teaching classic literature such as Pride and Prejudice and Hamlet brought me back to the universal themes pervasive in all great stories.

Greenberg: What was the impetus behind writing “Willie”?

Struthers: I wanted to expand on the traditional murder ballad genre—from folk classics like “Banks of the Ohio”, “Pretty Polly”, and “The Knoxville Girl”—by changing not the narrative, but the narrator.
