French Honors Program

The French Honors Program is exclusively for advanced students who can apply themselves to a rigorous program of coursework and research.

Requirements

In addition to requirements set by the College of Arts and Science, students must meet the following requirements:

  • All the requirements for the 30-credit-hour major in French.
  • One graduate-level French course during the senior year for at least 3 credit hours; this course may substitute for one 3000- or 4000-level course required for the major.
  • Earn a 3.5 grade point average in courses that count toward the French major.
  • Six credit hours of thesis credit under French 4998 and 4999 (Senior Honors Thesis), culminating in a written thesis.
  • An oral examination on the thesis and its area in the last semester of the senior year.

To apply for the French Honors Program, submit the application to Nathalie Debrauwere-Miller.

Senior Thesis

A senior thesis is required. During the second semester of the junior year, candidates submit an application to the departmental Honors Committee, indicating the topic of the thesis and the approval of their thesis adviser. During the senior year, the student is required to register for French 4998 and 4999 in order to complete the thesis. The student must complete an oral examination on the thesis and its area during the final semester of undergraduate study.
