Vita Summary

Anthère Nzabatsinda has spent twenty-eight continuous years at Vanderbilt University as a faculty member in the College of Arts and Science, Department of French and Italian, and as affiliate faculty in the Program of Comparative Literatures as well as the Program of African-American Program & Diaspora Studies. Professor Nzabatsinda joined Vanderbilt University in 1996 at the rank of Assistant Professor, and was promoted in 2004 to the position of a tenured faculty as Associate Professor of French. Prior to Vanderbilt, Prof. Nzabatsinda worked as a Lecturer at the universities of Montreal, McGill, and McMaster (Quebec & Ontario, Canada, 1989-1996). Professor Nzabatsinda gained his Ph.D. and M.A. in ‘French Studies’ (Études françaises) from the Université de Montréal, Canada (1993; 1986), and his B.A., English, in the ‘Faculté des Lettres’, Université Nationale du Rwanda, Butare (1978).

Professor Nzabatsinda has enriched the University and the academic world with contributions notable in content and variety. The corpus of his works, totaling over 80odd titles, comprises a combination of books, book chapters, academic journal articles, book reviews, and conference papers. Professor Nzabatsinda’s academic work covers the fields of Literatures in French, varieties of the French Language, translation of literary works, Literature in relationship with other artistic forms such as cinema, theater, and the press media.

Professor Nzabatsinda taught hundreds of students in a variety of undergraduate courses as well as graduate seminars. He directed Ph.D. dissertations and served as member of other dissertation committees. In the Department of French & Italian, Professor Nzabatsinda served, at multiple occasions, as Director of Undergraduate Studies, Library Representative (2004-2010; 2012-2015), chair on Committee for the student annual writing competition. He also rendered international academic service as consultant for the Royal Museum for Central Africa (African Linguistics & Culture research unit), Tervuren, Belgium (2015-2024), and as chair for the Francophone Caucus of the African Literature Association (2017-2020).
