Studio VU kicks off it’s Seventeenth Season with artist and filmmaker Deborah Stratman

Studio VU, the Vanderbilt University Department of Art visiting artist lecture series, will begin its 17th season welcoming artist and filmmaker Deborah Stratman to campus on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.  Stratman will present a lecture at 4:10pm in Room 220 of the E. Bronson Ingram (EBI) Studio Arts Center. Stratman’s visit is cosponsored by the Vanderbilt University Cinema & Media Arts Department.

Deborah Stratman makes work that investigates issues of power, control and belief, exploring how places, ideas and society are intertwined. She regards sound as the ultimate multi-tool and time to be supernatural.  Her recent projects have address various topics including freedom, surveillance, public speech, sinkholes, raptors, comets, evolution and others. She has exhibited internationally at notable venues including MoMA (NY), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Hammer Museum (LA), With de With (Rotterdam), PS1 (NY), Tabakalera (San Sebastián), Austrian Film Museum (Vienna), Yerba Buena Center (SF), MCA (Chicago), Whitney Biennial (NY) and has complete site-specific projects. She is a recipient of Fulbright, Guggenheim and USA Collins Fellowships, an Alpert Award, Sundance Art of Nonfiction Award and grants from Creative Capital, Graham Foundation, Harpo Foundation and Weiner Center for the Arts. She lives in Chicago where she teaches at the University of Illinois.


International Lens Screening Event

In addition to Stratman’s Wednesday lecture, the Vanderbilt University International Lens program will host a screen of her film, “Last Things (2023)” on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 7:30pm in the Rosthchild Black Box Theater located at 2401 West End Avenue, Nashville, TN 37203. This screening is part of the cosponsorship with the Vanderbilt University Cinema & Media Arts Department.


The Department of Art annually invites national and international voices in creative, curatorial, and critical-thought fields to the Vanderbilt campus through the Studio VU Lecture Series. Each visiting lecturer has a recognized career in visual arts, performance art, art criticism, and/or a combination. In addition to giving a lecture, the visiting speaker conducts one-on-one critiques with senior art major students.

The Studio VU Lecture Series began in 2007. The Department of Art would like to thank all collaborators, cosponsors, and community members for their continued support for the Studio VU program.
