About the piece and performers:
Table Music by Thierry De Mey is for three percussionists, each using a small table as their only instrument. The players explore the table itself, striking the table in different ways in order to introduce new sounds and ways of thinking about music through the lens of ordinary objects. About the piece, Thierry De Mey says, “The challenge of Table Music is to approach the sensitive line between music and the gestures that produce sound, to put your finger on the line of demarcation between dance and music: the visual and choreographic aspect in perfect balance of importance with the sound and the musicality of the interpretation.”
Alex Holloway is a third-year percussion performance major at Vanderbilt University. She studies under Professors Ji Hye Jung and Lee Vinson and performs with various ensembles, including the Vanderbilt Wind Symphony, Vanderbilt Orchestra, Vanderbilt Chorale, and the Vanderbilt Percussion Group. Alex has worked closely with contemporary composers, premiering chamber works by Aurél Holló, Omar Carmenates, Clark Hubbard, and Tod Machover. As a founding member of Mephitis Percussion Duo and Westwood Percussion, she seeks to expand the percussion repertoire and engage audiences worldwide through collaboration and community outreach.
Riley Hale is a Junior percussionist and Performance major at Vanderbilt University (Blair School of Music). She currently studies under percussion professors Ji Hye Jung and Lee Vinson, and plays in both Vanderbilt’s Wind Symphony and Orchestra, as well as the Vanderbilt Percussion Group. Riley has attended several summer intensives around the world, most recently visiting Korea with VPG and Yellow Barn with Professor Jung. Riley has claimed first prize in the Charleston Contemporary Music Competition, first place in the PASIC Concert Snare Drum Competition, and First Prize in the Southern Adventist Concerto Competition.
