Maya Singhal
Assistant Professor of Asian Studies
Maya Singhal is an Assistant Professor of Asian Studies with a focus in Asian American studies. Their current book manuscript, Safer: Community Defense in New York City, explores the conflicts and solidarities born out of community defense projects and alternatives to policing in Chinese, Black, and Latine neighborhoods from the 1960s to the present. Their work has appeared in publications including Science and Society, Theory and Society, and Made in China Journal. Singhal received their PhD in anthropology from Harvard University. They previously held postdoctoral fellowships in the Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity at the University of Chicago and in the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America and the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University. They have also taught in the Management Communication Program in the Stern School of Business at New York University. Singhal holds MA degrees in anthropology from Harvard University, the social sciences from the University of Chicago, and humanities and social thought from NYU. They received their undergraduate degree in social and cultural analysis from NYU.
