Chair’s Welcome
Greetings from the Department of African American and Diaspora Studies! We are a group of faculty and students from multiple disciplines interested in the history, politics, social structures, cultural practices, religion, arts, music, and languages of African people worldwide. We offer a major, a minor, and a graduate certificate in diaspora studies.
Our undergraduate program offers unique opportunities for global Immersion projects, spanning from the vibrant streets of Brazil to the rich cultural heritage of France and the evolving democracy of South Africa. Immersion is a key aspect of our curriculum, designed to broaden your horizons and deepen your understanding of the world and the African diaspora.
Given the breadth and depth of our course of study, students are well-positioned for careers in multiple industries, graduate school, law school, and medical school.
Our faculty excel as both teachers and scholars; their expertise and dedication are the pillars of our department, ensuring you receive a high-quality learning experience and exposing students to varying perspectives on the concerns of our times:
- Histories of our country
- Political leadership and political turmoil
- Medical disparities and social determinants of health
- Arts, education, and music
- Racial and gender matters
