Certificates Programs

Certificate in Latin American Studies
The Center for Latin American Studies offers graduate students from different departments and schools at Vanderbilt the opportunity to complete a Certificate in Latin American Studies. The Certificate allows students to document their regional specialization by earning the Certificate, which is awarded in conjunction with their M.A. or Ph.D. The LAS Certificate also encourages graduate students to study outside of their disciplinary specialization.

Graduate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies
Vanderbilt University’s Program in Women’s and Gender Studies offers an interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate Program. The Certificate Program provides graduate students across campus with access to interdisciplinary scholarship in the robust field of gender studies; supplies them with a valuable professional credential; and strengthens their ability to compete for jobs as well as national fellowships and postdoctoral awards.

Graduate Certificate in Diaspora Studies

Program in African American and Diaspora Studies
The graduate certificate in Diaspora Studies has been designed to complement students’ disciplinary training, expose them to the interdisciplinary trends in the academy, and broaden their career possibilities. The Diaspora Studies certificate provides graduate students with access to interdisciplinary scholarship in the dynamic and continually evolving field of studies in the  African Diaspora globally. The certificate also gives students a competitive edge and interdisciplinary training for the still robust career outlook for specialists in pan-black studies as well as in the search for postdoctoral fellowships in the humanities and social sciences.

English Department
The Ph.D. Program in English offers coursework and research supervision in all areas of British, American, and Anglophone literature, film, cultural studies, and literary theory.   We aim to produce first-quality scholars, critics, and teachers of literature and culture for colleges and universities.  Our program is small, focused, and dynamic.

Department of Philosophy
Work for the PhD degree is offered in all major fields and historical periods of philosophy.  The department has strengths in epistemology, ethics, feminist philosophy, metaphysics, phenomenology, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, and social and political philosophy. Our faculty reflects a variety of approaches and methodologies, including analytic, continental, historical, and pragmatic.

Department of French and Italian
The graduate program in French offers course work and research supervision in French / Francophone literature and applied linguistics. Related courses in critical theory, philosophy, and religious studies enrich the interdisciplinary nature of our program. Our relatively small program affords students individualized attention in small seminars with the graduate faculty in French. Students work with various faculty members to get training in teaching both French language and literature.

Department of History
With more than forty full-time faculty members, the Vanderbilt History Department trains graduate students in a wide range of fields and methodological approaches, covering periods from the Middle Ages to the present.

Jewish Studies under the Divinity School and Graduate Department of Religion
The MA in Jewish Studies addresses those who wish to end their formal education in the field at the MA level and also those who wish to do graduate work in Jewish Studies with the expectation that they might matriculate elsewhere in a doctoral degree. Students who apply for this degree can expect to deepen their preparation in Jewish Studies and to strengthen their credentials for application to other programs.
