Bhumika Piya

Bhumika Piya received her B.A. in Sociology from Saint Anselm College in 2006 and M.A. in Sociology from Vanderbilt University. Her major research interests include international migration, environmental demography, global health, and South Asia. Her master’s thesis examined the extent of feminization of international migrant populations by estimating age-standardized gender ratios of foreign-born populations in 56 nations for years 1960-2008. She is currently working on a multidisciplinary project that investigates the critical interactions between natural and human systems that motivate migration in southwest Bangladesh. Her dissertation will build on this project and examine how environmental stress interacts with socio-economic factors to influence migration decisions and other adaptation strategies.
