Team Science and the Role of Collaboration in Research

As the science of clinical psychology matures, the problems we study and the solutions we investigate are becoming more complex. Especially when clinical psychologists pursue a research career in an academic medical center setting, it is increasingly rare that one can build a viable research program without collaborating with others.

I will talk about some of my early experiences of being the psychologist on large multi-center clinical trials and my early introduction to multidisciplinary teams.  I will also reflect on some of the common problems encountered when collaborating with others.

Initially develop by the National Cancer Institute, Team Science is a growing body of work that endeavors to discover evidence-based strategies for improving teamwork and ensuring that expensive collaborative studies do not fail because of intractable interpersonal conflicts.

I will present some of the basic principles of Team Science and give us time to discuss how these might apply to your ongoing collaborative work.
