Biobehavioral and Social Factors Implicated in Pain Disparities
Although racial and ethnic differences in pain experiences and treatment are well-established in the United States, the mechanisms that account for such differences are not well understood. This talk will briefly review the extent of racial and ethnic differences in acute and chronic pain prevalence, pain severity, pain-related disability, and pain sensitivity. Findings from one completed longitudinal study will highlight the role of biobehavioral and social factors as correlates of pain sensitivity and predictors of pain trajectories and chronic pain onset. Findings from a second cross-sectional study will highlight the importance of socioeconomic features in machine learning models predicting high-impact chronic pain. A third ongoing study focusing on racial disparities in the transition from acute to chronic pain will be discussed. Finally, opportunities to prevent transition from acute to chronic pain and to mitigate pain-related disparities will be reviewed.
