These two Vanderbilt faculty members were presented with their medals by President Joe Biden at a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2025\/01\/03\/president-biden-honors-nations-leading-scientists-technologists-and-innovators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White House ceremony<\/a>\u00a0on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1959 by the U.S. Congress, the National Medal of Science is the highest recognition the nation can bestow on scientists and engineers. The presidential award is given to individuals deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or social and behavioral sciences in service to the nation. These broad areas include such disciplines as astronomy, chemistry, computer and information science and engineering, geoscience, materials research and research on STEM education. The NMS Program is managed by the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Bartels is one of the world\u2019s most influential scholars of democratic politics. Much of Bartels\u2019 research is focused on electoral politics, public opinion and the role of citizens in the policymaking process.
