{"id":238,"date":"2022-10-05T19:30:11","date_gmt":"2022-10-05T19:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/physics-astronomy\/?page_id=238"},"modified":"2025-09-15T06:43:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T12:43:00","slug":"phd-financial-aid","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/physics-astronomy\/phd-financial-aid\/","title":{"rendered":"Ph.D. Aid and Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Standard Financial Support<\/h2>\n<p>Students in the physics and astrophysics Ph.D. programs receive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A five-year package of financial support from the College of Arts &amp; Science and\/or external grants, including an annual stipend ($34,000-$38,000 for the 2024-2025 academic year)<\/li>\n<li>A full tuition waiver<\/li>\n<li>College-paid premiums for individual student health insurance (an annual value of $4,158.00)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Continued funding each year is contingent on a student performing satisfactorily in teaching and research<\/p>\n<p>Students in physics and astrophysics are expected to serve one to two years as teaching assistants. Typical teaching duties for a semester include teaching two introductory lab sections and\/or grading for a course. During the summer months, students are expected to join a research group and perform research activities, as determined by the faculty leading the research group. After the first one to two years, students join a research group full time as research assistants.<\/p>\n<h2>Additional Support and Awards<\/h2>\n<h3>University and Graduate School Fellowships and Awards<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.vanderbilt.edu\/funding\/university_scholarships.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University Graduate Fellowships (UGF)<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013 provides an additional stipend of up to $5,000 per year for three years, with a possible renewal for two more years; applicants are nominated for this award by the graduate program to which they apply.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.vanderbilt.edu\/funding\/university_scholarships.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Provost\u2019s Graduate Fellowships (PGF)<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents from diverse backgrounds; provides an additional stipend of $5,000 per year for three years, with a possible renewal for two more years; applicants are nominated for this award by the graduate program to which they apply.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.vanderbilt.edu\/gli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russell G. Hamilton Graduate Leadership Institute <\/a><\/strong>\u2013 provides several funding opportunities, including dissertation enhancement grants, professional development and training grants, and travel grants.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.vanderbilt.edu\/funding\/university_scholarships.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Harold Stirling Vanderbilt (HSV) Funds<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 provides two-year extensions for UGF\/PGF awards as described above; awarded by invitation only.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vumc.org\/oor\/vanderbilt-prize-student-scholar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Vanderbilt Prize Student Scholar<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 open to female graduate students in biomedical sciences (including biophysics) who have completed their qualifying exam; cash prize of $1,000 and opportunity to be mentored by the corresponding faculty recipient of the Vanderbilt Prize in Biomedical Science.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.vanderbilt.edu\/funding\/university_scholarships.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yellow Ribbon Program<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013 up to $6,000 in financial aid to post-9\/11 eligible veterans; eligibility determined by the Veterans Administration.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.vanderbilt.edu\/funding\/travel.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate School Travel Grants<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013 up to $500 in travel funds per year to enable graduate students to present their research at regional, national, and international conferences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Federal Agency Fellowships and Awards<\/h3>\n<p>Many of our students have received their own extramural fellowships from federal funding agencies. All students who apply for admission are automatically considered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert T. Lagemann Award<\/strong><br \/>\nEstablished in 1988 in honor of Robert T. Lagemann, Landon C. Garland Professor of Physics, Emeritus, who taught at Vanderbilt from 1951 to 1977.
