The regulations and requirements of the astrophysics Ph.D. degree program are set forth in the <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/physics-astronomy\/astrophysics-phd-guide\/\">Astrophysics Ph.D. Requirements Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Astrophysics Degree Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>Completion of the Ph.D. requires:<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"ContentPasted0 ContentPasted4\">1. Completion of 28 hours of formal course work including: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Five core courses covering the foundations of astrophysics totaling 16 credit hours<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ContentPasted0 ContentPasted4\">Additional graduate-level courses to make a total of 12 credit hours in any subject relevant to the student\u2019s overall program of graduate study and research<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ContentPasted0 ContentPasted4\">Earning a grade of B or higher in each course counted towards these 28 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Successfully passing the Qualifying Examination to become a doctoral candidate<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ContentPasted0 ContentPasted5 ContentPasted6\">3.
