{"id":32,"date":"2024-03-06T16:10:51","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T16:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/philosophy\/?page_id=32"},"modified":"2024-09-17T14:48:06","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T14:48:06","slug":"honors-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/philosophy\/honors-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Honors Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Honors Program offers opportunities for advanced study in philosophy, including independent research projects and\/or enrollment in certain graduate seminars (with permission from the course instructor).<\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility and Admission<\/h2>\n<p>To be admitted to the Honors Program, a student must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have declared a major in philosophy;<\/li>\n<li>Have a grade point average of 3.3 overall;<\/li>\n<li>Have a grade point average of 3.5 in philosophy courses; and<\/li>\n<li>Submit a written proposal for advanced study in consultation with a philosophy faculty sponsor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students who satisfy these requirements should meet with the <a href=\"mailto:matthew.congdon@vanderbilt.edu\">director of undergraduate studies<\/a> to review their programs, whereupon the director may nominate the students for Honors work.<\/p>\n<h2>Course of Study<\/h2>\n<p>Honors work typically begins in the junior year or in the first semester of the senior year. Students in the program must complete at least 3 credit hours of PHIL 4999: Honors Independent Study.<\/p>\n<p>Students who successfully complete the program while maintaining the necessary grade point averages will receive Honors in philosophy.
