Immersion

Immersion Is… An opportunity to pursue passions and cultivate intellectual interests through experiential learning. The Department of Philosophy offers various opportunities for students to combine both coursework and research into meaningful, immersive experiences.

Immersion Pathways

Students can pursue of the following three Immersion pathways in philosophy:

  1. Philosophy Research

This Immersion pathway allows students to conduct focused research on a topic in philosophy. Examples of this pathway include:

  • Connecting ideas in the history of philosophy
  • Developing ideas bearing on new practical problems
  • Applying theoretical views on pressing contemporary issues
  • Engaging further with standing literature on a classic debate
  1. History of Philosophy Research

This pathway enables students to conduct focused research related to the history of philosophy. Research can focus on:

  • Ancient philosophy
  • Hellenistic philosophy
  • Medieval philosophy
  • Modern philosophy
  • 19th century philosophy
  • American philosophy
  • Connecting ideas in the history of philosophy
  1. Value Theory Emphasis

Students in this Immersion pathway conduct research specifically related to value theory. Students can complete this pathway by completing two courses in value theory and developing a research project related to a connective theme the student identifies between the two courses.
