Written Assignments                                                            30 %
Vocabulary Quizzes                                                             10 %

Goals:

The tutorial section has two main goals: to help students develop their language skills, especially for discussing literature, and to complement the main section by allowing students to work with texts, films, or other materials in the original German.  It is to be expected that students come to the class with varying skill levels; students should help each other as much as possible and feel free to make mistakes - an essential part of acquiring new skills.  This additional hour in the class will expand your language skills, enable you to discuss literature and literary themes in German, and prepare you for future advanced German courses.

Grading:

The tutorial grade will constitute a percentage of the entire course grade for German 340. Students with prior knowledge of German (German 210 or equivalent, or placement by exam) may enroll in the tutorial, and students desiring major or minor credits must enroll.

In order to facilitate your knowledge of the language and your ability to conduct close textual analysis, I will introduce new vocabulary to the class and offer three vocabulary quizzes throughout the semester.  We will occasionally supplement your materials in the main section with other readings in German. Accompanying these readings will be discussion questions intended to help you work through the text and prepare for class discussion. Your written responses to these questions (in German, of course) will count for 30 % of the final grade and will be graded according to a “check plus,” “check,” or “check minus” system. I suggest that you collect all handouts, written assignments, and vocabulary lists and quizzes together in one folder and use them for later reference.

Attendance and Participation:

Tutorial participants will receive four credits for the entire course. The tutorial will meet for one hour a week, and attendance and participation are essential for the course to be an effective learning experience. Absences are excused only in case of illness, religious holidays, and family emergencies. Please call or e-mail me 24 hours in advance if you will miss class.

“Class participation” consists of contributions to the conversation as well as a concerted effort to improve mastery of the language and to formulate ideas about the literature and cultural materials we discuss. Most of all, I expect you to exercise your new skills in class with creativity, intellectual curiosity, and an open mind to the texts and to each other.
