“This Hebrew is Heavy With Impending Catastrophe”: Teaching Hebrew in American Colleges with Mazalit Haim

for a lecture followed by a discussion with Dr. Mazalit Haim

The lecture will address the challenges and joys of teaching Hebrew in American colleges, which revolve around the tension between the sacred and the profane, the ancient and the contemporary that this language holds, and the role of the instructor as a cultural mediator, both for heritage and non-heritage learners. We will discuss the extent ​to which these challenges are particular to the teaching of Hebrew or whether they reflect the broader challenges of foreign language teaching in present-day academia.
