Goldberg Lecture - Michelangelo's David: Censorship and Responses from the Renaissance to Today

On September 14, 2023, the Department of History of Art and Architecture presented the Norman L. and Roselea J. Goldberg Lecture in Art History - Michelangelo’s David: Censorship and Responses from the Renaissance to Today. This presentation was given by A. Victor Coonin, Professor of Art History at Rhodes College. The talk began at 4:10pm in 203 Cohen Memorial Hall with a reception following in the Cohen Memorial Hall atrium. The event was free and open to the public.

Michelangelo’s David is frequently in the news, most recently for various acts of censorship. Historically, the statue has a long tradition of evoking censorship and other controversies. Professor Coonin discussed this history and highlighted some of the constructive responses the statue offers audiences to today's most pressing issues.

This event was sponsored by the Department of History of Art and Architecture and the Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies.
