The below timetable clarifies the expectations of when <\/span>each of the steps through the program should ideally be completed. Please bear in mind that, in individual cases, there may be a need to be flexible about the timing of specific aspects of the program. Overall, however, we believe it is best for our students to have a clear idea of the pacing of progress that the faculty believe will prove most fruitful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Year 1<\/h2>\n

1st <\/sup><\/span>semester (Fall)\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • HIST 6100\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Two additional courses\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Languages (non-credit)<\/li>\n
  • Explore possible dissertation topics<\/li>\n
  • Start thinking about major and minor fields\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    2nd <\/sup><\/span>semester (Spring)\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • HIST 6110<\/li>\n
    • HIST 8000: One hour independent study with first year adviser or recommended specialist; in conjunction with HIST 6110; Oversight of 1st year paper; See 6110 guidelines<\/li>\n
    • Two additional courses<\/li>\n
    • Write first of two required research papers<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Tentative selection of major and minor fields, and of Ph.D. committee<\/li>\n
    • Consult by May 1 with committee members about summer readings for qualifying exam and about summer research for second research paper<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Take at least one language exam if two are required<\/li>\n
    • Apply for internal funding for language training support in summer<\/li>\n
    • Narrow range of possible dissertation topics\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      1st <\/sup><\/span>summer\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
        \n
      • Languages<\/li>\n
      • Read in major and minor fields to prepare for qualifying exam<\/li>\n
      • Preliminary research on potential dissertation materials and concepts<\/li>\n
      • Conduct research in preparation for second\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>research paper, if possible\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Year 2<\/h2>\n

        3rd <\/sup><\/span>semester (Fall)\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
          \n
        • Three courses<\/li>\n
        • Write second\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>required research paper in conjunction with one of the three <\/span>courses or independent study taken this semester<\/li>\n
        • Finalize major and minor fields and Ph.D. committee by October 15<\/li>\n
        • Turn in Fields for Qualifying Exam Form to the graduate administrator by October 15<\/li>\n
        • Work on finalizing reading list for major and minor fields for qualifying exam<\/li>\n
        • Languages (non-credit)<\/li>\n
        • Apply for archival travel grants for second\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>summer<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Make a list of grants to support dissertation research<\/li>\n
        • Continue exam and dissertation reading<\/li>\n
        • Refine dissertation topic\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          4th <\/sup><\/span>semester (Spring)\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
            \n
          • Three courses; students are encouraged to take independent study courses and\/or reading courses geared toward preparing for their qualifying exam<\/li>\n
          • Students should exercise caution in this semester in taking courses outside the department that require major papers to be written, unless such courses help with preparing for qualifying exam<\/li>\n
          • Study for qualifying exam<\/li>\n
          • Apply for archival travel grants for second\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>summer<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Submit forms for Ph.D. committee at least two weeks before qualifying exam<\/li>\n
          • Mandated language exams must be passed by April 7<\/li>\n
          • Take qualifying exam by May after classes end (or in some cases by December of the fifth\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>semester)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            2nd <\/sup><\/span>summer\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
              \n
            • HIST 8200: prospectus seminar (Maymester\/ Aug-Oct; appears in YES as a fall course)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Year 3<\/h2>\n

              5th <\/sup><\/span>semester (Fall)\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

              • HIST 8200: prospectus seminar. Return start of fall semester with draft<\/li>\n
              • TA assignment<\/li>\n
              • Apply for grants for dissertation research<\/li>\n
              • Present dissertation prospectus by end of fifth\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>semester (or by Spring Break of the sixth<\/span>\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>semester for those who took qualifying exam in fifth<\/span>\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>semester)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • HIST 6300: teaching workshop<\/li>\n
