Dive Deep. Faculty in the Department of History of Art and Architecture conduct extensive research on a full array of art history and architecture from around the world. From cross-cultural and religious themes in architecture of the Balkans and Mediterranean to premodern Japanese art history—their deep and diverse collection of knowledge and research is prolific.

Research Highlights

Tracy Miller

Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture

Tracy Miller researches the culture of ritual sites in middle-period China (618-1644 C.E.), specifically the ways in which identity was expressed visually through the media of temples and their artistic programs. Her publications range from digital humanities and the interdisciplinary database to defensive structure and construction materials used in Song city walls.

 

 

Kevin Murphy

Andrew Mellon Chair in the Humanities and Professor of History of Art

Kevin Murphy’s work focuses on historicism in France and the United States, and 19th and 20th century architecture and material culture in Europe and North America. He has published numerous books and journal articles and co-edited several volumes.

Rebecca Keegan VanDiver

Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture

Rebecca VanDiver’s research focuses on 20th century Black women artists and more recently the use of ephemeral print in African American Art. Hear her discuss the work of Elizabeth Catlett, an African American printmaker and sculptor.
