Prof. Murphy teaches courses in 19th- and 20th-century architecture and material culture, primarily in Europe and North America. His work has focused on historicism in France and the United States, including in the book Memory and Modernity: Viollet-le-Duc at Vézelay (2000). He has also published the book, Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill, Maine: Commerce, Culture and Community on the Eastern Frontier (2010), The Cathedral of Notre-Dame of Paris: A Quick Immersion (2020), several co-edited volumes, and numerous journal articles. Prof. Murphy’s book, written with Mary Anne Hunting PhD, entitled Women Architects At Work: Making American Modernism, is forthcoming from Princeton University Press.
