Shatema Threadcraft’s Award Winning Publications
Congratulations to Associate Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies Shatema Threadcraft, whose scholarship has been cleaning up on awards recently!
Threadcraft’s essay, “Anti-Black Violence and Toni Morrison’s Democratic Storytelling,” won the Okin Young Award in Feminist Political Theory from the American Political Science Association (APSA). This is Threadcraft’s second time winning, making her the first author in the award’s history to do so.
The essay is an excerpt from her book, The Labors of Resurrection: Black Women, Necromancy, and Morrisonian Democracy, which won the 2026 Ralph J. Bunche Award and the 2026 Victoria Schuck Award from APSA, and won silver for the 2025 Foreword Indies Book of the Year for Women’s Studies. The book delves into Black femicide, or the intentional, gender-based murder of Black women and girls.
