Retired Professor of French, Barbara Bowen, dies at age 82
Barbara Bowen, Retired Professor of French, died peacefully at home on November 19, 2019, at the age of 82. She had suffered a re-occurrence of lymphoma and been under hospice care for a week. She is survived by her two daughters, Sarah L.Wilkinson and Tessa J. Majors, and their families. No memorial plans have yet been announced.
Barbara was a very distinguished Renaissance scholar,had held a Guggenheim fellowship and served as president of the Renaissance Society of America. She was educated at Oxford and at the U of Paris. She came to Vanderbilt from the U of Illinois and served as department chair. She particularly enjoyed staging French plays in the department and organizing annual French poetry reading events. She and her husband Vince, a retired 18th c French specialist, regularly opened their home for department social gatherings.
