It was also longlisted for the Booker Prize and the Dublin Literary Award. In 2025, Bullwinkel was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsandletters.org\/news?slug=2025litawards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Addison M. Metcalf Award<\/a> by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which biennially honors a young American writer of great promise. She is a 2022 recipient of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiting.org\/awards\/winners\/rita-bullwinkel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whiting Award<\/a>, the editor of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsweeneys.net\/pages\/announcing-the-next-editor-of-mcsweeneys-quarterly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McSweeney\u2019s Quarterly<\/a><\/em>, a contributing editor at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/english\/reading-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOON<\/a><\/em>, the creator of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/oralflorist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oral Florist<\/a><\/em>, and the former deputy editor of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebeliever.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Believer<\/a><\/em>. A selection of each <i>McSweeney\u2019s Quarterly\u00a0<\/i>issue she edits is produced for audio by\u00a0<i>the New York Times<\/i>. In addition to editing\u00a0<i>McSweeney\u2019s Quarterly<\/i> (the house\u2019s magazine of art and literature), Professor Bullwinkel also edits one book-length work a year for McSweeney\u2019s Book Division. Books for which she has served as editor have been longlisted for the National Book Award and named a <a href=\"https:\/\/chireviewofbooks.com\/2024\/12\/17\/the-best-books-we-read-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cBest Book of the Year\u201d<\/a> by the <em>Chicago Review of Books<\/em>. As an assistant professor of English at University of San Francisco, and the Picador Guest Professor of American Literature at Leipzig University in Germany, she has taught courses on creative writing, zines, and the uses of invented and foreign languages as tools for world building. Her 2016 first English translation of Rabindranath Tagore\u2019s forgotten noir classic \u201cDetective\u201d (co-translated from the Bangla with Saquib Rahman) was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She was born in a suburb of San Francisco, in Santa Clara county, and raised across the Bay area.
