Vanderbilt Visiting Writer Series is partnered with Latina and Latino Studies (LATS) at Vanderbilt University to present the 2021 Spring Symposium: Writing to Live.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uapress.arizona.edu\/author\/fred-arroyo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fred Arroyo<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/uapress.arizona.edu\/author\/fred-arroyo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1166 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/01\/29220331\/arroyo-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fred Arroyo book cover\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/01\/29220331\/arroyo-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/01\/29220331\/arroyo.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0is the author of Western Avenue and Other Fictions and The Region of Lost Names: A Novel. A recipient of an Individual Artist Program Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, Arroyo\u2019s fiction is a part of the Library of Congress series Spotlight on U.S. Hispanic Writers. Arroyo\u2019s writing is also included in Camino del Sol: Fifteen Years of Latina and Latino Writing and The Colors of Nature: Essays on Culture, Identity and the Natural World. In the past decade Arroyo has driven considerable miles along the northern border of the United States, particularly in Ontario, Quebec, and the maritime regions, where he\u2019s camped, walked, canoed, and fished in a real and imagined North Country that\u2019s influencing a new collection of short stories and a book of poems. Arroyo is an assistant professor of English at Middle Tennessee State University.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myriamgurba.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myriam Gurba<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myriamgurba.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1168 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/01\/29220329\/Mean.jpg-200x300.png\" alt=\"Gurba Book cover\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/01\/29220329\/Mean.jpg-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/01\/29220329\/Mean.jpg.png 333w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0is a writer and artist. She is the author of the true-crime memoir Mean, a New York Times editors\u2019 choice. O, the Oprah Magazine, ranked Mean as one of the best LGBTQ books of all time. Publishers\u2019 Weekly describes Gurba as having a voice like no other. Her essays and criticism have appeared in the Paris Review, TIME.com, and 4Columns. She has shown art in galleries, museums, and community centers.
