English offers two 4+1 options: Literature and Creative Writing.<\/p>\n<p>Students who are interested in the 4+1 program should consult with their advisor as early as possible, decide which option they want to pursue, and make formal application to the department <strong>by the end of their junior year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For general information about the College of Arts and Science 4+1 program, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/academics\/specialdegree\/4plus1.php\">program webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>4+1 in Literature<\/h2>\n<h3>Application Process<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Each applicant must submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/22134232\/41-petition-form.pdf\">Petition to Apply to the Combined BA\/MA (4+1) Degree Program<\/a>,\u00a0approved by her\/his advisor, to the department for approval.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants who are approved by the department must submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/apply.vanderbilt.edu\/apply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English 4+1 application<\/a> to the Graduate School by the annual deadline of December 1.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants must provide all materials required by the online Graduate School application, which include:\n<ul>\n<li>Transcripts<\/li>\n<li>GRE scores (we <strong>do not<\/strong> require the English literature subject test)<\/li>\n<li>Recommendation letters<\/li>\n<li>Statement of purpose<\/li>\n<li>Writing sample<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If admitted to the graduate program, M.A. candidates must fulfill all requirements for the M.A. degree, which include:\n<ul>\n<li>RCR and CITI requirements<\/li>\n<li>30 hours of graduate-level coursework<\/li>\n<li>A master&#8217;s thesis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If appropriate, a student may begin graduate coursework during her\/his final undergraduate year.
