Vandy Debate in Bogotá, Colombia
On October 16-20, Vanderbilt Debate traveled to Bogotá, Colombia to compete in the team’s first ever international tournament. At the tournament, U.S. debaters were paired with debaters from Colombia. Vanderbilt’s Sael Soni and his Colombian partner, Ángela María Parra, won the first ever Colombian Civic Debate Tournament.
In order to compete, U.S. students needed to be fluent in Spanish, as two of the preliminary rounds were conducted fully in Spanish. Under the format for the Spanish language rounds, the U.S. student had to give two six-minute speeches in Spanish, plus participate in two four-minute cross-examinations. Sael impressed his peers, judges, and other spectators with his ability to debate in Spanish. The tournament was an incredible opportunity to learn about Colombia and international debate.
Congrats to VU Debate!
