Neil Butt Named Debate Director of the Year
Dr. Neil S. Butt, Director of Debate at Vanderbilt University, recently received the honor of Director of the Year by District 6 of the National Debate Tournament (NDT) and the Southeast Region of the Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA).
This award recognizes esteemed directors of debate from southern states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Dr. Butt, for his eight years at Vanderbilt, is a most deserving recipient of this honor.
Dr. Butt has been Director of Debate at Vanderbilt since the fall of 2010. During his time at Vanderbilt, he has coached several teams who have qualified to the National Debate Tournament, including a top 16 team. In addition, he has coached several of the best novice and junior varsity teams in the country. Dr. Butt was recognized though for more than his coaching accomplishments.
In NDT District 6 and the Southeast CEDA region, Dr. Butt is known for going above and beyond in his service commitments. Member schools of the district and region know they can count on him to help run tournaments. They also know they can rely on him to support and implement initiatives that improve our debate community. For example, he works every year on an evidence packet to make sure all member schools have the resources necessary to compete in novice debate.
His commitment to Vanderbilt and the debate community is matched by few others. We are very fortunate at Vanderbilt to have Dr. Butt as our Director of Debate.
